Earnings Estimates Continue to Rise as Q3 Reporting Season Takes Center Stage

HG MARKETS:

The Q3 earnings season gains momentum this week as major companies, including JPMorgan, Citigroup, Johnson & Johnson, Taiwan Semiconductor, and UnitedHealth, prepare to release their September-quarter results. Around 29 S&P 500 companies are scheduled to report this week, bringing greater focus to corporate profitability and market expectations.

S&P 500 earnings are projected to grow by 24.3% year over year, marking the index’s eighth consecutive quarter of double-digit earnings growth. Technology remains a key contributor, while improving earnings estimates across multiple sectors indicate that growth is becoming more broad-based.

Sector Performance and Earnings Outlook

Earnings are expected to increase in 15 of the 16 Zacks sectors, with six sectors projected to deliver double-digit growth. Aerospace leads with an estimated 159.5% increase, followed by Energy at 117.1%, Technology at 43.3%, Basic Materials at 29.7%, Industrial Products at 13.3%, and Transportation at 10.9%. Conglomerates is the only sector expected to record a decline.

Excluding Energy, projected S&P 500 earnings growth falls from 24.3% to 20.1%, while excluding Technology reduces the growth estimate to 14.2%. These figures highlight the significant contribution of both sectors to overall corporate earnings.

Financial Sector in Focus

The Finance sector is expected to report 3.3% earnings growth alongside a 6.3% increase in revenue. Banks and brokerages, including JPMorgan, Citigroup, and Goldman Sachs, are projected to achieve 2.5% earnings growth on 9.7% higher revenues.

However, rising long-term US Treasury yields during the quarter have created challenges for financial institutions. Higher yields can increase bond-related losses, put pressure on net interest margins, and weaken credit demand. Uncertainty surrounding interest rates has also affected deal making activity and contributed to delays in some high-profile IPOs.

Early Earnings Results

Among the 19 S&P 500 companies that had reported results at the time of the source report, aggregate earnings increased 150.9% year over year, while revenue rose 27%. Approximately 78.9% of companies exceeded earnings-per-share estimates, and 73.7% beat revenue expectations.

However, these strong results were heavily influenced by Micron, which recorded 1075.7% earnings growth. Excluding Micron, earnings growth among the remaining 18 companies was approximately 9.4%, suggesting a more moderate underlying performance.

Overall Market Outlook

Positive earnings-estimate revisions across Technology, Energy, Finance, Industrials, Aerospace, Construction, and Transportation support the broader corporate earnings outlook. Estimates for the fourth quarter of 2026 and full-year 2027 have also been trending upward.

The Q3 earnings season points to continued corporate profit growth, supported by Technology, Energy, and improving performance across several industries. Investors will closely monitor upcoming results, company guidance, Treasury yields, and interest-rate expectations to assess whether the positive earnings momentum can be sustained.

The US stock market outlook remains cautiously bullish as rising earnings estimates and broad-based corporate profit growth support investor sentiment. However, Treasury yields, interest-rate uncertainty, and upcoming earnings results will be key factors determining the market’s next direction.
